6th class visit to Bandon Library for workshop with author Paula Leyden report by Charlie Nolan and Laura Cullinane

On 7th October sixth class were lucky enough to get out of school and meet Paula Leyden, the author of 'Butterfly Heart' and 'The Sleeping Baobab Tree'.  Both books are set in Zambia in Africa where Paula grew up.  She now lives in Kilkenny.  Paula started writing when she came to Ireland evenghough her books are about Africa.

We drove to Bandon in a mini bus.  We were all excited.  First she told us about her life in Africa.  She began talking about a character in her book 'the Butterfly Heart' called Ifuafura who was based on a real man in Zambia.

If there's a snake in your house, he would come, but wouldn't kill it and take it away.  She demonstrated how to milk a snake!  Paula also showed us a picture of a tree called the upside-down tree.

A lot of people were asking questions about snakes and Paula answered them all.  At the end she said she was going to have a raffle.  She had three books to give away.  I wrote down my name and put it in the envelope.  I was thinking my name was never going to be called out.  Paula picked up the first one and read my name 'Charlie Nolan', I couldn't believe it.  I picked the sleeping Baobab tree.  She was a great person to meet and would recommend any of her books.
