The aim of Healthy Eating is to ensure children eat a healthy, well-balanced lunch, thus promoting a healthy lifestyle. By encouraging healthy eating patterns we educate children for later life.
Healthy Lunch Options -
We encourage children to choose from the following foods regularly -
* Pitta bread
* Raw vegetables
* Cheese, lean meat, eggs, fish, peanut butter, salad
* Fruit juice
* Yoghurt drinks
Treat Foods -
We recommend foods such as -
* Fresh fruit
* Yoghurt or yoghurt drinks
* Wholegrain/digestive biscuits
We discourage the 4Cs - chewing gum, crisps, chocolate bars and candy.
Teachers will continue to give children a sweet treat on occasions in recognition of work done, improvements in work or behaviour. Sweet treats used prudently by teachers will not interfere with the health of the children.
As part of the SPHE Curriculum learning about food and nutrition is encouraged - a copy of 'The Food Pyramid' will also be on display in every classroom and will be referred to regularly.
A healthy school environment is also encouraged e.g. posters on display, cooperating with the Green School Working Group i.e. recycling, composting etc.
Fruit Break - Children are encouraged to eat a piece of fruit everyday at first break.
Treat Day - Pupils can bring a treat sized bar on Fridays.
We will also have a Healthy Week at certain times throughout the year.
Grow Your Own! - Children will have the opportunity of growing some easy fruit and vegetables.
