The play/recreational facilities of St. Marys were extended in 2006. Following discussions with the then PP Rev. Fr. Ml. Nolan R.I.P. it was agreed to convert a field agaicent to the school into a games pitch for the children. The facility would measure 120 m x 70 m.
The Board of Management facilitated the setting up of a committee to oversee this project. Work commenced in March 2006 and the children were playing on its surface the following September. It was officially opened in May 2007 by Sean Og O hAilpin and blessed by Fr. Ml. Nolan. This was an exciting and an historic day for the school and brought together pupils, past pupils, parents, sports organisations and representatives from many schools both primary and seconday. Two very enjoyable games were played between St Marys NS and Greenmount NS. Both games were refereed by Sean Og. Catering on the day was expertely provided by our Parents Association - not an easy task given that close to 400 people were in attendance.
St. Marys acknoweldge the great financial support given to this project by Graingers Sawmills and greatly appreciate their long association with many school projects over the years. The financial cost of this project is being borne by them, over a five year period, ending in June 2011.
The children of St Marys will always be indepted to Fr. Ml. Nolan for his foresight and caring nature.
